Fewer Domain Name Registrations Reported

February 23, 2009

Short article in Central Penn Business Journal today from Andrea Maria Cecil. Verisign reports drop-off in domain name registrations.

While I understand why there would be a drop-off, I would hope that these numbers are the result of squatters spending less frivously and not because marketers are registering fewer.

I wish for my clients, like I do for my own kids that they’re smarter today than yesterday and wiser tomorrow than today, etc. That, when times get tough we employ more insightful solutions to solve our problems.

For instance, we know domain names are inexpensive and have been used by markters and advertisers in promotional campaigns. I would like to see more and more brands utilize online accompaniments to their offline media tactics and, therefore, incorporate tracking URLs in their ads.

Still, far too many brands have seemingly expensive offline media they’ve had produced and placed and too few of them integrate these messages with an interactive element that allows their customers to continue the conversation and experience online.

So, come on gang (marketers). Register your vanity/tracking URLs and let’s start integrating all of your media for the benefit of your customers – and your back end analytics (ROI measures).
